davezillionNo matter what your situation – renting an apartment in the city, living in a dorm room, own your own home, etc. – sooner or later you’re going find yourself lost without some basic tools.  The tools in your toolbox should match just how handy you are. Obviously if you’re the type who can install your own hardwood floors or put in some replacement windows your tool needs are going to be a little different than the needs of someone who is apprehensive about hanging a picture.

For all of you out there who fall into the latter category,, don’t worry. We’ll work together to change that.  A big part of getting things done on your own is having the courage, desire, time, willingness to learn, and of course, the right tools.

As you increase your comfort level you’ll begin to increase your own tool library.  To get you started, I’ve put together a list of tools and gadgets you should always have around the house.  These tools are an essential part of any home and can be used for a number of purposes..

·        Hammer

·        Cordless Power Drill

·        Screw Driver set (4 piece minimum)

·        Utility knife

·        Channel Locks

·        Pipe wrench

·        Wrench Set (8 piece minimum)

·        Ratchet Set

·        Drill Bit Set

·        Stud Finder

·        Paint Brush

·        Small Putty Knife

·        Adjustable Wrench

·        Duct Tape (You never want to find yourself without Duct Tape. This stuff is magic)

·        Tape Measure

·        Tool bag (I like these much better than the old tool box / much lighter and easier to organize.)

As I mentioned, this is clearly not an exhaustive list of all the tools you may ever need in order to get your stuff done.  But it is somewhere to get started.  At least one of these tools will play a role in any project you take on, including simple tasks like replacing the batteries in a child’s toy, hanging a picture or curtain, or lowering the seat on a bicycle.

Let me know what your staples list looks like and what tools you find yourself reaching for on a daily basis.  You know, the tools that you keep in the kitchen drawer that you’re always getting told to put back where they belong.  I’ll compare your list against Caldo’s Staples, and who knows, we may add your stuff to Caldo’s or post you’re whole list for others to use and learn from.

Caldo’s here to give you a virtual hand with all of your home projects. Send him questions at caldo@davezillion.com

My buddy who is a contractor was helping me out with something, he pulled these things out of his tool belt that looked like pliars but with very sharp edges for crabing things like stripped srews. Anyhow, he called it a Dyke but it also says channel lock on it. I found it in the hardward store and they are so useful. It’s now one of my staples.
