3/30/09 TOOL OF THE WEEK “THE TINE DETHATCHER”
The lawn dethatcher is Caldo’s pick for tool of the week. This simple tool is a wonderful invention. I can remember as a kid spending hours upon hours in the spring time raking up all the old dead grass from the previous years clippings and the cold winter. With a lawn dethatcher not only is your time and effort cut considerably, the tool does a wonderful job of prepping your lawn for the upcoming season. There a dozens of types of dethatchers, from hand held rake style to huge self propelled models, but this week I’m featuring the simple tow behind tine dethatcher. It’s fairly inexpensive and simple to use and does an excellent job!!!!! Caldo

Caldo:
Question about the dethatching process: How do you dethatch without damaging irrigation systems? Can you dethatch without damaging sprinkler heads?
Thks
Dave,
Most irrigations systems have the sprinkler heads low enough in the off position so they will not be damaged during normal yard work including dethatching. I recently worked with someone who had an irrigation system and the dethatching process did not interfere with the sprinkler heads of the irrigation system. As I mentioned there are several types of dethatchers and some may go deeper that others. The tine dethatcher will not normally damage an irrigation system. But, if you are concerned, you can always turn the irrigation system on and manually flag all of your sprinler heads prior to dethatching. This way they can be easily avoided and ensure a damage free process.
Hope this helps.
